Los Angeles Times Festival of Books

The Festival of Books began in 1996 with a simple goal: Bring together the people who create books and the people who love to read them. The Festival was an immediate success and has become Southern California's major literary event, now in its 24th year! The 2019 Festival will be held on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14 at the University of Southern California and we would love to have you join us as a volunteer. Last year over 150,000 people attended the Festival, which featured more than a hundred ticketed author events, children’s storytelling, poetry readings, book signings and more than 400 exhibitor booths. The Festival’s success has been due in part to the generous participation of volunteers who welcomed attendees, assisted with registration, staffed author events, supervised book signings and much more. Time Commitment: Volunteers sign up for one or more 3-4 hour shifts on one or both days. Requirements: The majority of volunteer activities require being on your feet for most of your shift. Please wear comfortable shoes and khaki or beige pants or shorts. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. (However, volunteers aged 15-17 can attend if they are volunteering along side a parent or guardian). **You cannot bring children under the age of 15 with you during your shift. Benefits: Volunteers will receive free parking, shuttle service from the parking lot and lunch. We will provide t-shirts for volunteers to wear and keep after the event. *Please sign up as soon as possible as space fills up quickly and the final deadline for pre-registering as a volunteer is April 1, 2019 After you express interest in this opportunity, we will send you further instructions on how to complete your volunteer registration.

The City of Alhambra is hosting its 5th Annual Neighborhood Clean-up event on April 27th, 2019 from 8 am- noon. The focus of this outreach event is to assist residents with a variety of exterior maintenance issues from hauling away trash and large bulky items to raking leaves, mowing lawns, pulling weeds and trimming hedges and trees which will help promote safe and well-maintained neighborhods. The city will provide food and drinks for our volunteers and the tools needed for the clean-up. If volunteers would like to bring their own gloves or tools they certainly can do so. We will have a central command post set up where all of our volunteers can meet, get briefed and fuel up on some coffee and breakfast items prior to being dispersed and also regroup after the event for lunch. Long term mentoring of a high school student from an under-resourced community

Volunteer with United Way of Greater Los Angeles and the Fulfillment Fund to help change lives for the better. Fulfillment Fund is a college access organization with a 40 year history of helping disadvantaged students graduate from high school and access college. One of our key services is mentoring. Recognized as one of the best in the state, the Fulfillment Fund’s Mentor Program provides guidance from adult role models to students whose life circumstances challenge their opportunities for success. Fulfillment Fund’s mentor program is community based, which means that mentors and their students decide when and where to meet for their outings. Mentors and their mentees meet 2x/month at the beginning of the match and 1x/month thereafter with a weekly text/phone call in between outings. The students in our program are chosen from several of our partner middle schools in Los Angeles and most live close to Downtown and South LA. Some of our mentors’ favorite outings with their students include: going to the beach, hiking, trying new restaurants, checking out museums, etc. We typically request a 2-year committment from volunteer mentors, although there are occasional opportunities for 1-year commitments. Often these relationships have the opportunity to continue for 6 years or more. Please visit our website for more information on mentor requirements: http://www.fulfillment.org/mentor
