Long term mentoring of a high school student from an under-resourced community

Volunteer with United Way of Greater Los Angeles and the Fulfillment Fund to help change lives for the better. Fulfillment Fund is a college access organization with a 40 year history of helping disadvantaged students graduate from high school and access college. One of our key services is mentoring. Recognized as one of the best in the state, the Fulfillment Fund’s Mentor Program provides guidance from adult role models to students whose life circumstances challenge their opportunities for success. Fulfillment Fund’s mentor program is community based, which means that mentors and their students decide when and where to meet for their outings. Mentors and their mentees meet 2x/month at the beginning of the match and 1x/month thereafter with a weekly text/phone call in between outings. The students in our program are chosen from several of our partner middle schools in Los Angeles and most live close to Downtown and South LA. Some of our mentors’ favorite outings with their students include: going to the beach, hiking, trying new restaurants, checking out museums, etc. We typically request a 2-year committment from volunteer mentors, although there are occasional opportunities for 1-year commitments. Often these relationships have the opportunity to continue for 6 years or more. Please visit our website for more information on mentor requirements: http://www.fulfillment.org/mentor

United Way of Greater Los Angeles and Imagine LA need you to make a true impact in our fight against homelessness. Imagine LA's volunteer mentors play an essential role in fulfilling our mission. They are eager to work in a team of like-minded peers and commit to a long-term volunteer position that’s incredibly fulfilling. Imagine LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending the cycle of homelessness, poverty and neglect for families. Imagine LA’s Family Empowerment and Mentorship (FEM) Program provides mentors to families who have exited homelessness and the mentors walk alongside these families through their journey from homelessness to self-sufficiency. One-on-one mentors (for adult & youth) are there to help out with anything from (but not limited to) teaching their mentee how to cook, finding child care for their small kids, helping them locate jobs, or just for advice. The head of household will also have a Financial Wellness mentor who will help with managing finances, budgeting, and tips on saving, along with any other finance goals that the family may have. The Finance mentor meets with the family at a minimum of once a month. Wayfarer 1:1 Program

Support the mission of United Way of Greater Los Angeles by volunteering today with The Wayfarer Foundation! Wayfarer 1:1 grew out of our desire to help our neighbors on Skid Row lead better, healthier and happier lives. We saw over and over again how the journey from life on the streets to employment, education and housing was long and treacherous, and we saw too many people lose hope along the way. We saw that those who did succeed, who were able to improve their lives, never did it alone. And an idea was born... What if each of us reached out to one person, got to know them, listened to their stories, laughed together and built a real friendship? What if we did this in the spirit of hope, dignity and love that all people deserve —no judgements, no expectations, but together as equals? And then what if we brought the collective knowledge of all the partners we know from the Carnival of Love to help our friends improve their lives? What we need now are 100 volunteers to join us. Wayfarer 1:1 will support these volunteers emotionally, financially and with the resources they need to make a lasting change in someone's life. This program will be a game changer for our neighbors on Skid Row and will change lives. Click "Express Interest" below for more information!
